McNeel Mill - Route 219 Pocahontas County
Route 219 winds past Watoga State Park and the rural landscape of Pocahontas County. Located 3 miles North of the town of Hillsboro, WV in the small community of Mill Point is where the McNeel Mill is located. In 1750, John Sewell, a pioneer settler camped here. Later in 1774, this became the site of Fort Day. In 1778, the McNeel mill was built and it was here that James E.A. Gibbs invented the chain stitch sewing machine in the same year. The mill closed in 1941. The McNeel Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 9, 1985 and was extensively restored with the help of the Pocahontas County Historical Society and the state's Division of Culture and History.
