Coopers Rock Overlook

I really had a time shooting here and I was honestly unfamiliar with the 50D's metering system. It was a dark gloomy overcast day but the fall foliage was beautiful, however I could never really even out the exposure no matter what I tried from a circular polarizer to a neutral density filter ...I even tried both...it seemed as if the foreground was always a little more illuminated than the background...mixed lighting? backlighting? metering for the foliage instead of a neutral gray reflection on the water?
