The Historic Pence Springs Hotel
Near Ronceverte, WV this plantation-style country inn is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. One of the “Historic Springs Of The Virginias,” the mineral water at the resort won a silver medal at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Mo. and guests flocked to the spa ”to take the waters.” Closed after the 1929 Wall Street Crash, it became an Appalachian Academy finishing school, established by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, until World War II. After the war, in 1947, it became a State Prison for Women. The prison closed in 1985 and in 1988, innkeeper Ashby Berkley restored the inn and reopened it to the public.
